BAPIO launched its Young Doctors’ Forum in Birmingham in July 2009 to help the next generation of doctors shape their future. The forum is open to BAPIO members who have graduated in the last 15 years.
At the launch of the forum, Dr Ramesh Mehta, President, BAPIO said “The formation of the Young Doctors Forum is vital for BAPIO as we want to be inclusive of the new generation to help us to shape their future”. The forum has been active in educational initiatives by organising national events. The ‘Getting published: What you need to know’ workshops in Cambridge, London and Wrexham (Wales) was well received and aimed to encourage research among junior doctors.
In 2011, the forum launched a Mentoring Scheme for BAPIO members following an in-house training programme developed and led by Dr Rajeev Gupta, Chair of BAPIO’s Yorkshire division. The scheme has been popular among members and has scope to expand its remit in future.

BAPIO MENTORING SCHEME
BAPIO’s Mentoring scheme is open to all its members. It aims to provide a strong platform for mentees to share their thoughts and learn more about themselves in a confidential setting on a one-to-one basis. Mentees will be systematically matched to a mentor who will offer up to 6 sessions of mentoring.
The Scheme was launched in April 2011 and is jointly coordinated by Dr Rajeev Gupta, Consultant Paediatrician and Chair of the Yorkshire Division of BAPIO and Dr Abrar Hussain, Consultant Psychiatrist and Chair of the Young Doctors’ Forum of BAPIO Dr Abrar Hussain said, “Mentoring is a process of maximising the potential of an individual through a process of systematic questioning, empathetic listening, non-directive exploration and creation of solutions from within a person. Mentoring guides the person to set goals, breaks them into measurable steps and devices a mechanism for taking actions”.
The Mentoring scheme is designed to improve not only the professional and personal development of an individual but also has an impact on family, friends and co-workers. Eventually it can lead the way towards higher achievements and valuable skills for those who wish to excel and develop further. Dr Rajeev Gupta said, “Mentoring helps achieve higher levels of success by identifying barriers and empowering mentees to create and implement solutions.
In the current climate where efficiency is the buzzword, mentoring seeks to create an ideal springboard for mentees to enjoy and experience this transformation.” There is no fee to register for BAPIO members.
